Menonton film ini rasanya mengingatkan saya dengan Killers of the Flower Moon. Satu keluarga dihantam banyak cobaan ini itu, tapi otak pelakunya bukan satu orang, melainkan masyarakat yang tinggal di sekitarnya. Perasaan marah, stress, dan takut bercampur jadi satu. Tak sedikit saya berkata kasar setiap adegan kekerasan seksual itu muncul, yang sayangnya dibuat terlalu eksplisit.

Sayang sekali, di film ini saya tidak menemukan satu alasan konkret dan kuat mengapa orang-orang di sekitar keluarga ini melakukan hal tersebut. Terutama di adegan di mana Bertha diculik lalu dibunuh. Balas dendam karena kelakuan kakaknya? Ingin melampiaskan hawa nafsu? Part ini bener-bener membingungkan, sekaligus bikin saya marah dan kasian.

Adegan yang berkaitan dengan pelecehan seksual sangat sangat eksplisit, jadi buat teman-teman yang tidak kuat nonton part ini, atau mungkin ada trauma masa lalu yg berkaitan dengan ini, perlu pertimbangan yang kuat banget sebelum nonton. Efek samping nonton film ini juga kuat, terlebih bila ditonton di jam terakhir bioskop. Pesan moralnya akan sangat terasa ketika pulang dari bioskop dan jalan pulang menuju rumah (saya perempuan, dan saya jalan dengan begitu buru-buru agar sampai rumah dengan selamat).

Satu hal yang menarik perhatian saya di film ini adalah shot nya. Pengambilan gambarnya sungguh unik. Bagi saya yang sungguh awam dengan sinematografi, saya kagum banget.

Nonton film ini di saat lagi kalut dan stress, berharap gue bisa ngakak lepas selama nonton dan lupain segala pikiran ruwet yang terjadi di kehidupan gue. Ternyata, selama nonton gue malah ketrigger sama beberapa scene karena lagi relate sama kehidupan personal gue. Beberapa scene itu bikin hati gue perih banget, seakan-akan "kok gak ada yang ngasih gue trigger warning soal ini sebelum nonton, sih? Tau gitu gue gak nonton film ini. Mending gue nonton Madame Web aja, gak peduli filmnya sejelek gimana."

Keluar bioskop, gue makin stress dan makin anxious. Pulang pulang jadi makin kalut.

Maaf jadi curhat personal. Tapi jujur, gue agak kurang enjoy nonton film ini.

How can somebody enjoys doing chores, gardening, and playing at the pools while lots of innocent souls were being tortured and burned in a concentration camp next door? I might've had an anxiety and nightmare every single night.

I got a chance to see this at the cinema during Plaza Indonesia Film Festival, and I can say that the sound is so eerie and frightening. This movie without sound effect might be just a slice of life movie of a German family. I couldn't stand hearing the screaming, the gunshots, the crying... This is a horror movie.

I can't wait to watch it on a regular screening, and I am currently on waiting list to read the book!!

This movie alone has already won in audiovisual aspect of cinematic experience this year. Everyone should watch the movie at least once in their lifetime, and watching it at IMAX cinemas is totally an obligatory. You can sense and feel being "closer to God" as the giant wormhole of Arrakis eating your whole body out, trembling when you see the arena fight scene in white and black color, while you feel your seat and whole studio is shaking by the audio for two hours and forty six minutes.

Now I understand why Denis Vileneuve insisted to push back the release date due to the strikes, it would be such a waste of time (and money, of course) to release it in late 2023. This should be nominated for Oscar 2025 in terms of editing, production design, scoring, etc. As written.

This is the movie I left the IMAX cinema being speechless for 10-15 minutes, processing what I've just seen.

Once again, Lisan al-Ghaib!

This is literally a Hollywood version of "Budi Pekerti" in surrealist theme produced by Ari Aster. Absurd at the beginning, and it's getting more and more absurd until the ending. If you happened to watch "Budi Pekerti", Paul Matthews (played by our legendary meme king Nicolas Cage) has the same character arc like Bu Prani. First, both of which get viral and get cancelled for something they are not intended to. Second, the whole family is messed up and impacted by the "events". Third, they both become public enemies when they showed up in public. Fourth, they were forced by the institution to create a public apology video and send it to internet. Fifth, they both are still in denial phase that they are not guilty and they believe they do something what it's right for them (which actually isn't by public views). I need crossover between those films (and of course between Paul and Bu Prani)!

A little bit regret not watching this during Christmas break last year but that's okay. I kinda remind this film with School Ties (1992) starred by Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck: same elite prep school, same representation of silly, naughty, spoiled rich kids from depending rich parents. But this one does not only relies on stories of undisciplined students, but also those of nerdy yet rigid history teacher and grieving school head cook. Three of which share Christmas together while stuck in school for different reasons. That's what made this film so heartwarming, but heartbreaking at the endings. Also, I want to see more of Dominic Sessa's filmography. I love seeing him in this film.
