The downside of Japanese movie from a series, especially a long running one, it's expect the audiences are following the series beforehand.
So every character introduction, motivation etc are mentioned just a little and focused to the main plot.
But the issue for this movie are not only that. The plot inconsistency, lack of characters development, not believable/engaging enough of world building that make this movie can't grasp the heart of the audiences even though Takeuichi Ryoma and all the supporting casts delivers their best acting.
