Of all possible directions and thematic offshoots, 28 YEARS LATER takes a sharp, bold turn by reframing the plot as a coming-of-age story steeped in isolation and grief. Just as unpredictable as Garland’s tonal shifts in the narrative is Boyle’s sympathetic yet stylish direction, capturing horror and confusion through bizarre atmosphere.
It’s a long-overdue sequel (though it hardly feels like one — it could almost pass as the launch of a new franchise, given how far the lore has evolved), but it’s a quintessential return. A reminder of just how alien, intimate, and isolating the first film truly was.
