All of you of this Earth, when the mourners take their seventh step in leaving your grave… Question from the Angel of Death should be answered. If you fail, so shall it come:
The story was bornt by philosophical questions that were pondered in late night conversations. One of those questions were "Is it possible for religion and rationality to meet?". Sita who was a rational person tried to prove that religion only exist to provoke fear after her parents were killed by misguided religious person.
In our religious community, I truly believe that there's a large number of individuals who have their own interpretation of their religion. Furthermore, they tries to invoke their belief to others, which would be the root of secularism.
Joko Anwar translate the question into a story that provoke fundamental thinking in order to find an answer which himself do not provide. It is our interpretation of the story that could create an answer for whatever question we had.
In terms of directing and creative vision, Joko Anwar delivered a well crafted story. His way to build tension through cutting in editing was effective. Moreover, his vision for the grave world scene successfully create fear for those believers or non-believers.
Experiencing Siksa Kubur and Badarawuhi in the same day was Barbenheimmer all over again for me. The same euphoric feeling was a great way to celebrate cinema.
